How to swap your skincare routine for the warmer weather

Just as we swap our clothes for the new summer season, our go-to skincare will need a refresh with lighter products making their way to the front of the #skincareshelfie.

The warmer weather can play havoc on the skin with increased humidity and sun exposure, making it more prone to oiliness and clogged pores. In the summer months I always swap my heavier moisturisers and cleansers for fewer and lighter products. This avoids that heavy feeling on the skin and leaves a lovely natural glow.

Over the years, I’ve found four tips that work well for swapping skincare routines over the seasons:

Switch to a lighter moisturiser

For most of us, the moisturisers we relied on in the winter to combat dryness are likely to be too heavy for this time of year.

At The Spa at Bedford Lodge we use ESPA products within all of our treatments as these create the perfect spa experience, and they offer a luxury and effective range of face and body products.

I’d recommend using the ESPA 24-Hour Balancing Moisturiser which helps to hydrate and clarify without feeling heavy on the skin and clogging pores. The infusion of White Thyme, Lavender and Chamomile help to soothe the skin while Irish Moss moisturises and protects.

Swap your cleansers

Similarly to moisturisers, in the winter creamy cleansers are often used to hydrate the skin. However, in the Summer months opting for a gel formula is great to give you that fresh and cool feeling.

Try ESPA’s Fruit Water Cleansing Gel which is a gentle cleanser to revitalise and refresh the skin. With the gorgeous scent of Bergamot and Grapefruit, this helps to wake complexions and washes away everyday impurities without leaving skin feeling tight.

Wear SPF

SPF is so important! Repeat! SPF is so important!

All year round, but especially in Summer, it is vital to wear SPF to protect the skin against UV rays and damage. It is recommended to wear an SPF rating of at least 15 and reapply often.

If you’re looking to combine your moisturiser with SPF for convenience, try ESPA’s Optimal Skin Pro-Defence SPF15 which is a daily moisturiser with the all-important SPF15 rating. Ingredients including Knotgrass, Golden Seaweed and Chicory Root Extracts to help to hydrate skin and provide protection from environmental exposure, restoring its natural strength.

Keep your skin exfoliated

To keep skin looking fresh and smooth, I’d recommend exfoliating 2-3 times per week. This of course depends on your skin type and the exfoliant you are using as some are suitable for everyday use.

In general, skin exfoliators will help to remove dead skin cells along with balancing uneven complexions. I enjoy using the ESPA Refining Skin Polish, a deeply cleansing, super-fine exfoliator, which leaves me with a radiant glow.

The Overnight Glow Enzyme Peel is another great option to achieve glowing and replenished skin and works overnight to recharge the skin.

At the spa we have a range of facials using ESPA’s products. One of my favourite treatments is the Advanced Enzyme Facial which can either be a 60 or 90-minute experience. The powerful and highly effective natural facial peel sets to smooth, soften and even the skin tone. The treatment begins with a brush cleanse, followed by an intense Enzyme Peel containing botanical extracts and Pumpkin Enzymes to deeply exfoliate and removes dead skin cells. Our therapists will then apply soothing Rose Quartz Crystals to help cool and calm. Post-treatment, skin will be left feeling Summer-ready with an ultra-smooth and glowing complexion.
